A turnstile gate lets people through one at a time, only after a card, face, fingerprint or QR code is accepted. It replaces a guard checking ID cards at the door, stops tailgating, and records every entry for attendance or security. “Turnstile” covers four quite different gates, and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake we see, so this page compares them side by side.
The four types of turnstile gate
| Tripod turnstile | Three rotating arms at waist height. Robust and the most economical, so it suits factories, canteens, schools, gyms and labour entries. Slower than a flap barrier and can be jumped, so it needs a guard nearby at sensitive sites. |
|---|---|
| Flap barrier | Two slim cabinets with retracting acrylic or glass flaps. Fast, quiet and good at catching tailgating. The usual choice for office lobbies, IT parks, coworking spaces and residential towers. |
| Swing barrier / speed gate | Taller glass wings that swing open, with wider lanes. Used for premium lobbies and as the wide lane for wheelchairs, trolleys and luggage next to flap barriers. |
| Full height turnstile | A floor-to-ceiling rotating gate that cannot be climbed or jumped. For perimeter and outdoor entries: factory gates, construction sites, warehouses, stadiums and labour colonies. |

How to choose
- Indoor lobby or outdoor gate? Indoors, a flap or swing barrier looks right and moves people fastest. Outdoors and at the perimeter, a full height turnstile is the only type that cannot be jumped.
- How many people at the busiest time? Count people entering in the busiest 15 minutes, usually the shift start, and plan enough lanes. Flap barriers handle a busy lobby with fewer lanes than tripods.
- Who else needs to pass? Always plan one wide lane or a side gate for wheelchairs, trolleys, deliveries and visitors with luggage.
- Which credential? RFID card, face recognition, fingerprint, or QR codes for visitors from a visitor management system. Face recognition stops people lending cards.
- Fire safety: every turnstile gate must open automatically on a fire alarm signal or power failure. We connect it to the fire alarm panel.
- Attendance: the same readers can mark staff attendance, so you may not need a separate attendance machine.

Frequently asked questions
Which turnstile gate is best for an office?
For an office lobby, flap barriers are the usual choice because they are fast, quiet and catch tailgating, with one wide swing or flap lane for wheelchairs and deliveries.
Which turnstile gate is best for a factory?
Tripod turnstiles suit indoor or covered worker entries on a budget. For the main perimeter gate open to the road, a full height turnstile is better because it cannot be jumped.
What is the price of a turnstile gate?
It depends on the type. Tripod turnstiles cost the least, flap and swing barriers more, and full height turnstiles the most. Approximate starting prices are in the table above, and each price list shows current models.
Can a turnstile gate also record attendance?
Yes. The card, face or fingerprint readers on the turnstile can send punches to attendance software, so the same entry also marks attendance.
