Access control for offices: card, face or mobile?

Access control decides who can open which door and when, and records every entry. The credential you choose affects convenience, security and cost.

RFID cards

• Strengths: low cost, fast, familiar, and can double as an ID card
• Limits: cards can be lent or lost

Face recognition

• Strengths: nothing to carry, cannot be lent, touch-free and fast
• Limits: higher cost per door, and needs sensible placement

Fingerprint

• Strengths: cannot be lent, and cost-effective
• Limits: needs touch and can struggle with worn fingers

Mobile and QR

• Strengths: convenient for visitors and flexible workplaces
• Limits: depends on phones and software support

Combining credentials

Many offices use cards or face recognition for staff, QR passes for visitors, and card plus PIN or face for server rooms. The same system can manage all of them.

Do not forget

• Electromagnetic or electric locks suited to each door
• Exit buttons and emergency break-glass units
• Automatic door release when the fire alarm triggers
• Battery backup for locks and controllers
