Conventional vs addressable fire alarm systems

The difference between conventional and addressable fire alarm systems, and which suits your building.

Both systems detect smoke or heat and sound the alarm. The difference is how precisely they tell you where the fire is.

Conventional fire alarm

Detectors are wired in zones, for example one zone per floor. When a detector triggers, the panel shows the zone, not the exact detector.

  • Best for: small offices, shops, small schools and small factories
  • Strengths: lower cost, simple to operate
  • Limits: staff must search the whole zone to find the fire

Addressable fire alarm

Every detector has its own address. The panel shows exactly which detector triggered, such as "Floor 3, Room 305".

  • Best for: hospitals, hotels, malls, towers and large factories
  • Strengths: exact location, fewer wires on large sites, better fault reporting
  • Limits: higher cost

Integration

A fire alarm can release access-controlled doors, call lifts to the ground floor and trigger evacuation messages on the PA system. Plan these links at the design stage.

Keep it maintained

Detectors collect dust and batteries age. Regular testing and maintenance keep the system reliable and ready for fire inspections.
